Artist Statement
[en] My latest paintings drawings and objects respond to two concerns. On the one hand there’s the need to represent the sentimental and social world around me, in an effort to some how understand it and in this way keep it at a healthy distance; hence the irony, the humor or the magical air of these representations. On the other hand there’s the will to desacralize the creative act as well as the art work itself by giving them such prosaic and profane functions as thanking or begging. The inexpressive Black and White photography portraits, old and new, ,have been long present in my work. I think this has to do with a certain obsession about death and how it gazes at us from the bottom of other people’s eyes. By transforming and relocating these characters in new roles and sets I’d say I aspire to or somehow play with the idea of “bringing the dead back to life”. [esp] Mis ultimas pinturas, dibujos y objetos responden a dos inquietudes. Por un lado está la necesidad de representar el mundo sentimental y social que me rodea, en una suerte de esfuerzo por comprenderlo y así mantenerlo a una distancia saludable; de ahí la ironía, el humor, o incluso el aire mágico de estas representaciones. Por otro, la voluntad de des-sacralizar tanto el proceso de creación como la obra de arte misma dotándolas de funciones tan prosaicas y profanas como agradecer o pedir. Los retratos fotográficos en blanco y negro, antiguos y nuevos, inexpresivos, han sido un hilo conductor de mi trabajo. Pienso que esto se debe a una cierta obsesión por la muerte y por como esta nos mira desde el fondo de los ojos de los demás. En este sentido mi proceso de trabajo al transformar y reubicar a estos personajes en roles y en escenografías nuevas aspira o juega de alguna manera con la idea de “revivir lo muerto”. |
